Just Add Water: Vegan Hot Cocoa

By Samantha Coffin, Health Coach + Office Manager

Some days are meant for cuddling into a cozy blanket with fuzzy socks, a classic movie and a warm cup of cocoa. But what if you are dairy-free or sugar-free? It can be really hard (and expensive) to find an alternative.

This hot cocoa recipe is simple and easy!! It can be mixed ahead of time and made just as easily as instant cocoa packets. The trick is, powdered coconut milk and coconut sugar!

We love coconut milk! Unlike its counterpart, dairy, it can:

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Lower bad cholesterol

  • Build muscle

  • Reduce fat

  • Prevent fatigue

  • Assist in balancing weight

  • Improve digestion

  • Relieve constipation and more!

Coconut sugar is still sugar and is high in calories but it has a hand over refined sugar because:

  • It retains nutrients found in the coconut palm

  • It contains iron, zinc, calcium, potassium and antioxidants

  • It has a lower glycemic index, meaning your body absorbs the sugar slowly

So, when we need to feed that sweet tooth with a cup of hot cocoa, coconut sugar wins over refined sugar every time!

Ingredients:

Recipe:

  • Sift all three ingredients together and whisk together.

  • Add approximately 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix to one cup of water.

  • Top with coconut whipped cream or cinnamon if desired.

  • Stir well and enjoy!

Psst. Put in a cute jar with the recipe on a tag, this makes an awesome holiday gift too!
